Sport hall in Wingate Institute

On Tuesday September 5th 1972 eight terrorists from the “Black September” terror organization entered the Israeli delegation to the Munich Olympic Games rooms where 11 athletes stayed. During the takeover the terrorists murdered Moshe Weinberg the wrestling coach and wounded Yosef Romano the weightlifter. They captured the remaining nine and held them in the wounded Yosef Romano’s room. Yosef Romano died in front of his captured friends.
The negotiations between the Terrorists and the German authorities lasted a day after which the hostages were transferred to helicopters taking them to a near by military airbase. There, after a failed rescue attempt all nine were killed.

The Athletes were commemorated in many places in Israel and abroad. In the Tel Aviv garden named after the eleven there's a yearly memorial that is attended by the families and Israeli officials.
