On a high hill above Kibbutz Mishmar Haemeq, a hill known as "Volcano" hill stands the memorial to members of the Kibbutz that were killed during their military service or terror attacks. Every years on memorial day the ceremony is held at the memorial.
On Sunday, April 4th, 1948, the first day (out of two weeks) of the attack of Kaukgi army on Mishmar Haemek was also the first time that Jewish settlement was bombarded by canons in the independence war. On that day, Yosef Gaon, 83 years old, Ruth Rosenkranz-Efrati, 22 and her daughter Ilana one year old were killed. They are commemorated together with the soldiers of the Kibbutz.
On December 1948 the Kibbutz celebrated Hanukkah, on Friday December, 24th, 1948, enemy airplanes came to bomb the near by ramat david airport, the area was dark and the only light in the area was a small Hanukkah lamp on top of the Kibbutz water tower. The enemy airplanes aimed at that small light, some bombs hit the Kibbutz houses, the children house took a direct hit. Four members of the Kibbutz were killed, Miri Katzir, 26, and three children of the "rimon" group, Elite Horowitz, 8, Yehudit Shpitzer-Shoham 9 and Arieh Brachot, 9 years old.
