On Friday, June 8th, 2002, Palestinian terrorists came into the settlement Karmei Zur. When the IDF soldiers came to the place they found that the terrorists are in the caravan area where there are many families and small children. The soldiers decided to storm the terrorists. All jumped out of the Jeep and started to fight. Shalom Mordechai, 35 years old and the Medic that were behind were hit from shooting of a terrorist that hid below one of the Caravans. The officer and the driver were hit as well from another terrorist shooting.
Shalom Mordechai was taken to Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem where he died from his wounds.
On 2003 the “Bezeq” broadcast station on the Carmel was named after Shalom and a monument was placed in the place.
