On May 15th 1974, three terrorists came across the border from Lebanon on their way to Maalot. The terrorists arrived at Maalot around 3:30 after killing a woman from Fasuta that they met on the way. When they arrived to the Cohen home they broke the door. Zefina Cohen, 35 years old hid her son Itzhak under the bed. Immediately after her husband Joseph, 45 years old, herself and their 4 years old son , Eli, were shot and killed. Their daughter, Beya, was badly wounded. Itzhak was saved as he wasn’t found by the terrorists.
The terrorists then entered the “Netiv Meir” school where students from Zefat who were on their yearly shool trip were sleeping. They captured the students and held them hostage.
On that after noon the IDF broke into the school trying to free the hostages. During the fights 22 students were killed. Many others were wounded.
