On July 12th, 2006, the last day of the reserve duty, Eldad Regev, 26 years old along with his pal - Ehud (Udi) Goldwasser, 31 years old, went out on a patrol. The tour included two "Hammer" vehicles who moved along the border fence within the sovereign territory of Israel. Udi sat in the right front seat. Eldad was sitting in the back seat, behind Udi.
At the same time Hezbollah terrorists opened heavy artillery barrage along the northern border. It turned out that this was a diversion intended to disguise the planned kidnapping. The patrol was attacked by a squad or two of Hezbollah. The first Hammer was hit. The second managed to report about the damage before directly was hit by two anti-tank missiles, which killed three soldiers who were in the vehicle Wasim Saleh Nazzal, Ayal (Tuvia) Banin and Shani Turgeman.
The Hezbollah entered Israeli territory and kidnapped Eldad and Udi to Lebanon. Later signs of Blood stains and hole in the fence were found.
Immediately after the incident was the first attempt to rescue Eldad and Udi. Staff from Battalion 82 of the Armor forces made enormous efforts to get to them Despite the heavy bombardmententered into Lebanon in an attempt to stop the terrorists' getaway car. Very short distance from the border the tank went on an explosive device of hundreds of pounds of explosives. Force of the explosion destroyed the tank completely and four crew members - Yaniv Bar - On, Shlomi Jeremiah, Gadi Moiseyev and Alexei Kosnirsky - were killed. Sergeant Nimrod Cohen was killed a short time later, when he arrived with a relief force to the rescue the damaged tank.
Following the kidnapping Israeli government decided to start the Second Lebanon War.
In Adamit Park near the Lebanon border a memorial was erected in memory of the five killed in the patrol.
