On the 2nd of Tevet 5749 (13.12.1988), Yaakov Pereg, 31, went on a patrol of the area he was assigned to near Har Bracha, the settlement where he lived. He encountered an Arab who had trespassed into a prohibited area. It is not known for certain what happened there, but it is clear that Yaakov, who was a paratrooper and combat medic and knew how to handle his weapon well, did not use a weapon. Apparently Yaakov politely asked the Arab to leave the area, but the Arab posed as a friend and thus managed to sneak up on Yaakov from behind and smash his head with a large rock.
The Arab then took Yaakov's weapon, fired at a military force passing by on the nearby road, killing one of the soldiers, Corporal Arthur Hursting, a member of the medical corps.
