On September, 23rd 1956, during the Sukkot holiday, there was an archeological tour in Kibbutz Ramat Rachel south of Jerusalem. During the tour a Jordanian soldier opened fire from a post near the Kibbutz. Yakov Pinkerfeld, who was lecturing that day, was badly wounded and died on the way to hospital.
Three others died that day – Chaya Ram, Rudy Rodberg, and Baruch Shochetman - and a fourth – Yosef Hirsch - died of his wounds five years later.
In 1957 a memorial plate was put in place. The plate did not mention Yosef Hirsch, who died in 1961.
In 2006, a new memorial plate was put in place, describing the event and mentioning all of the fallen people.
Thanks to Yosef Avi Yair Engel, known also as Jocha, for taking the photos and for sending them to me.
