On June 1940, 9 months after the start of world war II, Italy joined Germany.
Mosolini, Italy leader, declared “Total shut” of all British colonies, including Israel (then Palestine). From July 1940 till end of 1941, Tel aviv Haifa and the refineries near Haifa were bombed 15 times by Italian aircrafts coming from Greece. Some of those bombings were lethal and caused hundreds of casualties, Jews, Arabs and British.
On Monday, September 9th 1940 , Italian aircrafts bombed tel Aviv. 130 people were killed, hundreds wounded.
On Wednesday night June 12th 1941,Italian aircrafts bombed Haifa and Tel Aviv, most bombs fell in open fields, one bomb hit the “Invalid building” a home for the elderly where 40 old people stayed. The building was destroyed in the bombing, 13 were killed and 20 wounded.
In Michaels Square in Tel Aviv there's a monument to all those killed in the Italian bombardment.
