After Her military service Barbara Proper, 22 years old, joined the group who established Kibbutz Sde Boker in the Negev. In Sde Boker she was appointed shepherd of the sheep herd of the Kibbutz.
On Tuesday morning, September 23rd, 1952, while she went out with the Herd , Barbara was shot from an ambush and was killed. The Herd was stolen. It was assumed she was shot but Bedouin coming from Egypt nearby border.
A park commemorating her was built few hundred meters north of the entrance to the Kibbutz.
