During Operation Protective Edge on Thursday, August 1, 2014, Hadar Goldin, Benya Sarel, and Liel Gideoni encountered a terrorist ambush in Rafah and were killed in the encounter.
On August 1, 2014, a 72-hour ceasefire began at 08:00. This ceasefire was violated shortly after by Hamas by launching several rockets at communities around the Gaza Strip and then by firing two mortar shells.
A Givati Patrol force under the command of the reconnaissance company commander, Benya Sarel, which included Goldin along with a small number of fighters and commanders, continued its operational activity to locate tunnels in the Rafah area. At 9:05, terrorists who emerged from a tunnel attacked the force, killing three of the force's soldiers: the reconnaissance company commander, Major Benya Sarel, Sergeant Liel Gideoni, and Goldin. Who was kidnapped into a tunnel that continued north.
Hadar's grave was set in the cemetery in Kfar Saba, but his body is still held by the terrorist organization Hamas.
