On the last day of school, June 30, 2016, an Arab Muslim terrorist from a neighboring village broke into the isolated house of the Ariel family in northern Kiryat Arba. He entered the house through the window of Hillel's room, and while she was sleeping in her bed, the terrorist stabbed her to death with nine stab wounds to the heart and body.

After murdering Hillel, the terrorist waited at home for Amichai, her father, to arrive. Only the resourcefulness of two members of the Kiryat Arba emergency response team who arrived at the house and fought the terrorist saved the father from death – one of them lost an eye in the struggle, and the other killed the terrorist.

Hillel's parents, who are leaders of the pilgrimage to the Temple Mount, named the entrance gate to the mountain after Hillel, instead of the Mughrabi Gate, the gate will be called Hillel's Gate.

Hillel Ariel's parents said at the ceremony: "On this day, five years after her murder, we are setting up a sign that will mark the entrance to the Temple Mount for all the people of Israel and will be named after her, the Gate of Hillel. This is our way of commemorating her for the sake of all the people of Israel."
